salt on the kitchen table beside the pepper<\/p>\n<p>his sea legs are slowly adjusting to dry ground<\/p>\n<p>they say there are countless cities between here<\/p>\n<p>and the coast with warehouses full of dead fish<\/p>\n<p>their streets slicing the night like glowing eels<\/p>\n<p>the squares crammed with statues of the phaeacians<\/p>\n<p>who were turned to stone by the vengeful god<\/p>\n<p>of those cities he has seen none he stays at home<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>ii<\/p>\n<p>mornings penelope shuttles majestically<\/p>\n<p>between the living room and the pantry<\/p>\n<p>twenty years is a twinkle for a heavenly body<\/p>\n<p>whose orbit was clasped by the cosmic cooper<\/p>\n<p>and being a wife becomes her even though<\/p>\n<p>he still wonders what was the nose job for<\/p>\n<p>the desk chair keeps suggesting alien shapes<\/p>\n<p>but the stars in the window have not changed<\/p>\n<p>since he drove them home from the journey<\/p>\n<p>he likes the stars well enough but he misses the sea<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>iii<\/p>\n<p>they have no kings now and he has been<\/p>\n<p>pensioned off by the municipal council<\/p>\n<p>he could have tried his hand at a service station<\/p>\n<p>but the models are all new jammed with wires<\/p>\n<p>and he yearns for his little statelet he used<\/p>\n<p>to criss-cross each morning smiling benevolently<\/p>\n<p>but the sea has receded his subjects are dispersed<\/p>\n<p>the dead fish whisper in the foam of his dream<\/p>\n<p>and the statues hum their distant sea shanties<\/p>\n<p>cut into shreds by the wind in the pillars of air<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>iv<\/p>\n<p>this evening is probably his now-or-never chance<\/p>\n<p>what with his son not back yet from the rehab<\/p>\n<p>his wife off to her weekly quilting bee whatever<\/p>\n<p>ever so furtively he turns the ignition<\/p>\n<p>launching his tin ship onto the waves of dusk<\/p>\n<p>is this a flight or perhaps his last assault<\/p>\n<p>something to be decided later for now<\/p>\n<p>he reads the remaining stars not yet mowed down<\/p>\n<p>by autumn from ithaca all the way to albany<\/p>\n<p>and on to troy aiming at the maine coastline<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>v<\/p>\n<p>he will never come back now no such thing<\/p>\n<p>as back because the sea retraces its retreat<\/p>\n<p>the lobster season is over and on the beach<\/p>\n<p>a solitary someone lights up the smoke mixes<\/p>\n<p>with the mist while the smoker merges<\/p>\n<p>with the observer let the rancorous god rage<\/p>\n<p>at the trespasser who is the king again<\/p>\n<p>of infinite space and his own lone subject<\/p>\n<p>braving the foaming jaws of the last element<\/p>\n<p>gone and never come back never
