Something was circling over me <\/p>\n

that looked like windblown poplar fluff,<\/p>\n

but it was someone otherworldly<\/p>\n

muddling my senses from above.<\/p>\n

I knew for sure one day I\u2019d die <\/p>\n

and stick it to the one, thereby, <\/p>\n

who\u2019d whispered: \u201cnothing\u2019s ever gone <\/p>\n

traceless into oblivion,
\n <\/p>\n

nothing and no one’s ever gone\u2026\u201d <\/p>\n

That’s nonsense, balderdash, I said, <\/p>\n

a realist seasoned to the bone, <\/p>\n

I raved and bobbed my mortal head. <\/p>\n

So we communed while in the sky <\/p>\n

over the streetcar clouds flew by, <\/p>\n

the city smelled like asphalt, gas <\/p>\n

and grass \u2013 young, sunlit, living grass.
\n <\/p>\n

Eventually pacified <\/p>\n

I rode to get the clothes and all, <\/p>\n

to have the papers stamped and signed <\/p>\n

as needed for the funeral. <\/p>\n

They brought me with a somber air <\/p>\n

her coat and dress and underwear, <\/p>\n

I stood there watching from a distance <\/p>\n

the bottom line of an existence.
\n <\/p>\n

I signed and left without delay, <\/p>\n

the whole thing was too much to bear;<\/p>\n

from Him Who’d taken her away<\/p>\n

I asked for tears that heal despair, <\/p>\n

but no tears came to me in need, <\/p>\n

nor words that I could trust and heed,<\/p>\n

that would disturb my soul anew <\/p>\n

in the unfathomable blue.
