but I see women, wearing something normal,<\/p>\n

and girls, unexceptional from every facet,<\/p>\n

There was a kids\u2019 shampoo, called \u201cTear-Free,\u201d<\/p>\n

that must\u2019ve been dreamed up by a Hasid.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll try to keep this tear-free.

My ears detect a babel of tongues <\/p>\n

into the sky; the lines reach out<\/p>\n

like late night swimmers<\/p>\n

All the available languages,<\/p>\n

sputtering in a dissonant chorus<\/p>\n

We know all too well how exasperated<\/p>\n

\nMy Pogroms<\/strong>

\nGrandma used to say that no one ever laid a hand on them:<\/p>\n

her father the butcher would put aside a nice filet for the local police chief,<\/p>\n

and get him a goose for the holidays.<\/p>\n

I used to imagine a pogrom as a scene from the classic film The Wedding,<\/p>\n

feathers flying through the air.<\/p>\n

Back in the eighties, grandma decided to make new pillows out of her old ones.<\/p>\n

Feathers of geese slaughtered before the revolution,<\/p>\n

bribes for the police chief, were carefully transferred into new pillow liners,<\/p>\n

as I worried that we might accidentally summon the pogrom spirit.<\/p>\n

And, what do you know, we had!<\/p>\n

In April of \u201989 the whispers began.<\/p>\n

 
\nJust you wait, Hitler\u2019s birthday is coming.<\/p>\n

Why don\u2019t you go to that Israel of yours.<\/p>\n

Some did.<\/p>\n

On the 19th of April our phone went silent.<\/p>\n

Our town averted its eyes. <\/p>\n

I took my toddler for a walk,<\/p>\n

avoiding meeting eyes with people we knew:<\/p>\n

why make people uncomfortable?<\/p>\n

I felt embarrassed for the antisemites ever since I was a child.<\/p>\n

I felt sorry for them\u2014all those who demeaned themselves<\/p>\n

by their baseless hatred.
\n <\/p>\n

During the afternoon nap, I got two phone calls: one from reckless Vova,<\/p>\n

who said that if we\u2019d like to stay with him, he\u2019s got brass knuckles for the pogromshchiki and some pillows for us,<\/p>\n

and the other one from Alyona, who rationally concluded that while her grandma<\/p>\n

might be overjoyed to hand over the adult Yids, she\u2019d never do that to a child.<\/p>\n

We decided to stay home.<\/p>\n

In the end, there were no feathers.<\/p>\n

Soon after we decided to leave.<\/p>\n

But we learned once and for all how it feels: that expectation of a pogrom.<\/p>\n

Sometimes, the air itself is heavy with pogrom,<\/p>\n

as it was once in Moscow before Passover,<\/p>\n

as it was once on a bus in Amman,<\/p>\n

in a dangerous crowd of youngsters<\/p>\n

who were winding themselves up.<\/p>\n

Today another town, which has long become my own,<\/p>\n

is empty and silent, expecting a pogrom.<\/p>\n

Maybe I lost my feel for it, maybe I\u2019m just no longer afraid,<\/p>\n

but no one is averting their eyes.<\/p>\n
