I haven\u2019t sat in a basement with sirens wailing, in fear that strips you of everything down to the sense of your own skin.<\/p>\n
I haven\u2019t waited for days in a row on a folding chair by the ruins of a house in hope of identifying: a friend, a neighbor, a coworker, a classmate.<\/p>\n
I haven\u2019t buried hastily by a playground any relatives (\u201cMaria, 44 \/ son Igor, 12\u201d) or neighbors (\u201cno-one\u2019s grandmother\u201d).<\/p>\n
I haven\u2019t rushed\u2014with a pumpkin-seed shrapnel in my daughter\u2019s temple\u2014to the near nowhere and far nowhere so she could learn to walk again \u2013 at 13.<\/p>\n
I haven\u2019t spread my arms like a giantess to left and right in the border crossing chaos to catch the edge of my daughter\u2019s hood with one hand and never let go of my mother\u2019s walker in the other.<\/p>\n
I haven\u2019t heard my father yell in response to my desperate call from Poland, \u201cfascist scum, if I was there I\u2019d give you a thrashing.\u201d<\/p>\n
I haven\u2019t sought a replacement for the feet that hadn\u2019t learned to dance, or the hand that a moment before held a doll.<\/p>\n
I haven\u2019t finally climbed out of a cellar to drink water from a puddle in May for the first baby-blue gulp down my dry throat after two black months.<\/p>\n
I haven\u2019t injected two nameless people with morphine before closing their eyes, ten and fifteen years old or so, who couldn\u2019t be saved\u2014they could only be laid down side by side, two people who didn\u2019t know each other, in the last unwarming embrace.<\/p>\n
On February twenty four, twenty twenty two I sailed off to that desert island and took with me nothing but this.

\nThey strike a pose, they look a little tense,<\/p>\n
and just before they glance into the lens<\/p>\n
a heavy bird flies out of it and flutters,<\/p>\n
and so their faces are archived at once,<\/p>\n
unready, with a dry click of the shutter.<\/p>\n
After a hundred years, I quickly note<\/p>\n
each imperfection: creases on the coat,<\/p>\n
the pretty lips that didn\u2019t duly pout,<\/p>\n
and hiked-up skirt: the lazy, drunk, remote<\/p>\n
photographer didn\u2019t care to smooth it out.
\n <\/p>\n
They didn\u2019t come here for the picture, yet<\/p>\n
the summer night, the old park lane, the wet<\/p>\n
gleam on the pond, weed-overgrown and green,<\/p>\n
the flashes, as if thrashing in the net<\/p>\n
some strange lumiere fish glistened, never seen \u2014<\/p>\n
everything fascinated them and drew<\/p>\n
them to the man, his studio, and through<\/p>\n
its dusty glass, deep down into the well<\/p>\n
that was the lens; so things get slapped askew<\/p>\n
onto the print, before they go to hell.
\n <\/p>\n
Behind their backs a dingy dark backdrop,<\/p>\n
because the sun is not yet fully up<\/p>\n
its daily arc, and rather than lush pastures,<\/p>\n
there are but ashes… Still, here at his shop<\/p>\n
they cannot see what’s coming in the future:<\/p>\n
he\u2019s slightly lost, a pauper at the court,<\/p>\n
a shadow on his face, a heavy heart,<\/p>\n
and she, trapped in the lens, stands silent there;<\/p>\n
\u201cTsarskoye, dated\u201d \u2014 the inscriptions sport<\/p>\n
a fancy flourish, started and cut short \u2014<\/p>\n
it\u2019s all your fault, inept photographer!
\n <\/p>\n
So life would not retouch the face, nor lift<\/p>\n
her hand to wipe the brow, so time is swift<\/p>\n
developing the film, so your reversals,<\/p>\n
photographer, send everything adrift;<\/p>\n
I am the reader of your random gift,<\/p>\n
spectator of your innocent rehearsals.
\n <\/p>\n
And so I see how darkness never fell,<\/p>\n
he wasn’t killed, and she stayed sane and well<\/p>\n
and in the end, attending to the matter,<\/p>\n
the ever-silent postman, death himself,<\/p>\n
did not pass by her door and ring the bell<\/p>\n
to hand her the triangle of a letter.
