of fire. Beside me, a hound named Courage.
\n <\/p>\n

The sharp smell of elder to ward off mice.<\/p>\n

Deliver me, Lord, from all false devices.<\/p>\n

Where we trap fish, selkies love lords<\/p>\n

and salt glimmers on steeds\u2019 eyelashes.
\n <\/p>\n

One leap \u2013 and selkies and steeds imprint <\/p>\n

themselves on my Psalter, trashing my work.<\/p>\n

Matthew, our cellarer \u2013 loved by a succubus \u2013 <\/p>\n

says to erase them with a sprinkle of flour.<\/p>\n

 
\nA devillet giggles outside the door.<\/p>\n

No way \u2013 no devillets in the scriptorium.<\/p>\n

Bind him tight \u2013 let him writhe and squirm!<\/p>\n

Enough of his tedious trickeries!

I watched stones of the church of the Virgin<\/p>\n

scouring the ruins for their own flesh.

Those stones had been laid in a new way; <\/p>\n

The bishop had voiced his delight\u2026<\/p>\n

Letter on letter: the sweetest of joys.<\/p>\n

I released the poor silly devillet.
\n <\/p>\n

A harmless fellow, quiet as a mouse,<\/p>\n

he now feeds me the fish he has netted.<\/p>\n

I subsist on rich herring, while I recall<\/p>\n

my kindred, word upon word.
\n <\/p>\n

Snow shapes her letters, biding her time;<\/p>\n

she waits for her parchment to blacken.<\/p>\n

Snow needs her sky-mother to yield to night.<\/p>\n

she can\u2019t write on white \u2013 on black alone.<\/p>\n

the fur of its vague caresses: never end, never start.

if I love you so much how come we spend so little time<\/p>\n

together \u2013 and isn\u2019t it always so, don\u2019t we all keep <\/p>\n

the same habits, let us raise a howl when the moon climbs \u2013<\/p>\n

for people, for the other objects, rising from the deep<\/p>\n

The shadows of maps, stretched out under our feet.<\/p>\n

Stepping on them frightens us, could we be there once more?<\/p>\n

And nothing can be put back quite as before.

My head spins when I see the globe at rest. <\/p>\n

What\u2019s become of its axel, its metal frame?<\/p>\n

Only a queue of cars and ramshackle buses<\/p>\n

Standing on the high road until time starts again.
\n  <\/p>\n

No nights and no days. But remember how father<\/p>\n

took up the lamp and said: walk round it as it spins<\/p>\n

you\u2019ll see how it works. In a dream you slid off the globe,<\/p>\n

woke weeping, then slept again and breathed: into the future, into death. <\/p>\n
