\nHe crosses himself and steps through the night
\nTo the south, where Yekaterinburg shines with light,
\nWhere neon is flooding the broad avenue,
\nHis stride leaves a trail glowing purple and blue
\nIn empty streets, alleyways, boulevards and squares,
\nOn streetcar tracks, bridges, along thoroughfares,
\nHis boots, seen by nobody, rumble and squeak,
\nA glamorous wench in the bar gives a shriek,
\nCars and buildings resound and tremble in pain,
\nAll over the city alarms go insane,
\nHe comes to the square where the town hall stings
\nThe sky with its steeple, and cobblestones ring,
\nHis son and four daughters rising up in the black
\nOf the night, stand in silence behind his back;
\nAnd rising from mine shafts, ravines, old grave mounds
\nAre people who once walked alive on the ground,
\nOre seekers, house serfs, poor peasants and priests
\nFrom villages strewn north to south, west to east,
\nIndustrial workers with children and wives,
\nFoot soldiers, dragoons, constables, officers rise;
\nThe town fills with victims of torture and murder:
\nThose flogged in dungeons, or shot on order
\nOf the Cheka, or hunted and killed by Kolchak’s
\nWhite Army, or slashed in the steppe by the Cossacks;
\nThey emerge from the darkness to march by his side
\nIn silence, their savage eyes fixed, as they stride
\nIn the emperor\u2019s wake, on the five-pointed star
\nThat shines ruby red from the tower afar,
\nThe star sends its shimmering rays on the breeze,
\nNight rooks make a ruckus and caw in the trees,
\nThe sky softly sways, the horizon glows red,
\nThe spire reaches up to the clouds overhead,
