Open the blinds in the living-room \u2013 you\u2019ll see the puppets clapping
\na dance round Papa Carlo in his rented digs on Capri
\nwhere he\u2019s been re-creating out of logs from olive trees
\na country that stays on its knees.<\/p>\n

The sun goes down, the hearth\u2019s swept clean of any ash or letters
\nthat might have smelled of cat or fox, the wandering boy\u2019s tormentors.
\nBut nearby lies a long cheap scarf that could have been unrolled
\nfrom Puppet-Master Meyerhold.<\/p>\n

The lady next door hunts for mice, wielding an axe with brio.
\nThe windows face the back stairs of the Hotel Paradiso.
\nIt smells like flour (or something fouler) sprinkling in the well
\nthat leads to Circle X of Hell.<\/p>\n

Scrape lively, chisel! Sing, old saw! And send your shavings whirling
\nto giddy heights, turning the jingle of the hurdy-gurdy
\ninto an anthem for the state enforcers to remand
\nall wanderers to the Motherland.<\/p>\n

And this is how a country\u2019s made \u2013 from iron fist and frost.
\nAnd Alpha-God will say: \u201cI am your King, the first and last.\u201d
\nAnd dark will come, and with it dreams to make God\u2019s creatures happy.

\nNobody knows exactly what he looked like.
\nBut he stands frozen with a cross in hand.
\nResembling Lenin\u2019s obelisk in Moscow,
\nhis pose of these five hundred years unquestionably struck like
\nthe leader of a nation, creator of its history:
\nhere\u2019s where he docked, said such-and-such, built this fort here.<\/p>\n

He stands there with the features of a hero
\nof bygone centuries, watching the sea roll
\nsurveying a port so rich with forests and wild grasses,
\nas once he stood commanding a flotilla
\nof Bolsheviks, his sights on the Bastille,
\nyelling in Spanish: \u201cUp your fucking asses!\u201d<\/p>\n

He stands, presumably bone tired
\nof eyes of tourists putting down America.
\nAround him Puerto Rico and the esthetic of
\na mediocre life: poor, dirty, uninspired,
\ndegraded by the fight for world dominion
\nand faith in queen and empire.<\/p>\n

Nobody knows, by faith or numerous empirical
\ntests of Bazarov\u2019s nihilist opinions,
\nwhat life should be, and whether it should end in
\nbronze or some sort of resurrection.
\nIn this sense, he was no exception,
\nalthough the pose he froze in looks almost transcendent.<\/p>\n

He stands here, like someone who got a taste
\nof power, but was not completely satisfied.
\nHe strains aloft, pumped up with extra rabid pride,
\nstamping his feet on a pedestal that\u2019s seen better days.
\nDefying verticality, he strains aloft,
\nseeks a new life \u2013 and with it, a new taste<\/p>\n

of shining deeds that backward Russia moaningly awaits,
\nsplayed on a stove and sleeping in a hayloft.
\nHe strains aloft, and no one has a clue:
\nthey walk past, drink tequila, breathe in the humidity.
\nThe black sea fizzes with plebeian timidity.
\nAnd somewhere Chatsky calls: \u201cA carriage \u2013 get me out of here!\u201d
