sticks,<\/p>\n<p>Cut stems struggling to put down feet,<\/p>\n<p>What saint strained so much,<\/p>\n<p>Rose on such lopped limbs to a new life?<\/p>\n<p>I can hear, underground, that sucking and sobbing,<\/p>\n<p>In my veins, in my bones I feel it \u2013<\/p>\n<p>The small waters seeping upward,<\/p>\n<p>The tight grains parting at last.<\/p>\n<p>When sprouts break out,<\/p>\n<p>Slippery as fish,<\/p>\n<p>I quail, lean to beginnings, sheath-wet.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>Root Cellar<\/strong><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nNothing would sleep in that cellar, dank as a ditch,<\/p>\n<p>Bulbs broke out of boxes hunting for chinks in the dark,<\/p>\n<p>Shoots dangled and drooped,<\/p>\n<p>Lolling obscenely from mildewed crates,<\/p>\n<p>Hung down long yellow evil necks, like tropical snakes.<\/p>\n<p>And what a congress of stinks!\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Roots ripe as old bait,<\/p>\n<p>Pulpy stems, rank, silo-rich,<\/p>\n<p>Leaf-mold, manure, lime, piled against slippery planks.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing would give up life:<\/p>\n<p>Even the dirt kept breathing a small breath.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Weed Puller<\/strong><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nUnder the concrete benches,<\/p>\n<p>Hacking at black hairy roots,-<\/p>\n<p>Those lewd monkey-tails hanging from drainholes,-<\/p>\n<p>Digging into the soft rubble underneath,<\/p>\n<p>Webs and weeds,<\/p>\n<p>Grubs and snails and sharp sticks,<\/p>\n<p>Or yanking tough fern-shapes,<\/p>\n<p>Coiled green and thick, like dripping smilax,<\/p>\n<p>Tugging all day at perverse life:<\/p>\n<p>The indignity of it!-<\/p>\n<p>With everything blooming above me,<\/p>\n<p>Lilies, pale-pink cyclamen, roses,<\/p>\n<p>Whole fields lovely and inviolate,-<\/p>\n<p>Me down in that fetor of weeds,<\/p>\n<p>Crawling on all fours,<\/p>\n<p>Alive, in a slippery grave.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Long Live the Weeds<\/strong><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nLong live the weeds that overwhelm<\/p>\n<p>My narrow vegetable realm! &#8212; <\/p>\n<p>The bitter rock, the barren soil<\/p>\n<p>That force the son of man to toil;<\/p>\n<p>All things unholy, marked by curse,<\/p>\n<p>The ugly of the universe.<\/p>\n<p>The rough, the wicked, and the wild<\/p>\n<p>That keep the spirit undefiled.<\/p>\n<p>With these I match my little wit<\/p>\n<p>And earn the right to stand or sit,<\/p>\n<p>Hope, love, create, or drink and die:<\/p>\n<p>These shape the creature that is
