\nMy grandpa David was killed in \u201842.
\nHe had a hellish job\u2014a sapper in the field.
\nThere is no grave, the house is gone.
\nHe fought a year, then he was felled.<\/p>\n

His wife and daughter made it, with God\u2019s help.
\nThough faith in God was beyond grandpa\u2019s ken.
\nHe fell as he defended East from West\u2014
\ndeath came from the west back then.<\/p>\n

Not long ago, my grandma died as well,
\nalmost a hundred. In her room she had
\nsome poison in case war broke out,
\nshattering all. Another Stalingrad<\/p>\n

she couldn\u2019t bear to see. She was a nurse
\nback then. Her nightmares to the last
\nwere full of bodies, young and old,
\nstreaming with blood and pus.<\/p>\n

I see my grandma in my dreams sometimes,
\nwe talk, our voices barely audible.
\nAwake, I\u2019ve got my grandpa\u2019s medal left,
\nsome papers, and a photo on the wall\u2014<\/p>\n

a faded, hazy photograph, from whic
\nmy young and lively grandparents look on.
\nTarutyne, Petrivka, Akkerman\u2014
\nthose were the places they called home.<\/p>\n

Now, rockets hail down on those parts again,
\njust like in \u201941.
\nI\u2019m glad that grandpa David\u2019s not around
\nto see it. And that grandma\u2019s gone.<\/p>\n
