I left for home and once the year had passed<\/p>\n

came back, to find the air turned water-dense. <\/p>\n

I must have gotten lost somehow, I guess.

At home the sky was also gone, and there<\/p>\n

I was trailed closely by the watery air,<\/p>\n

which streamed along, just within sight,<\/p>\n

until it up and tore away in fright

when, like a fish, I gasped till I could feel <\/p>\n

the oxygen flow swiftly through my gills,<\/p>\n

I sighed, got used to water, lost my fear\u2026<\/p>\n

But all the sky was missing. Everywhere.

\nThe Passion of the Grapes<\/strong>

\nSo passes time\u2014comes May, then June,<\/p>\n

And while we try our best to prune<\/p>\n

The excess, August finally descends.<\/p>\n

The city of the dead in summer can\u2019t be beat,<\/p>\n

The harvest of its grapes is clogging up the streets.<\/p>\n

A house across the way sun-dries its tenants

\nAtop a roof that\u2019s gently sloping down,<\/p>\n

All but the redheads welcomed by the sun.<\/p>\n

The days creep like a vine along the walls,<\/p>\n

Spraying the ground below with grape juice.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s some breath still left within us,<\/p>\n

But a deathly stare is trained upon us all.

\nA man with skin peeled off is pulp and blood.<\/p>\n

The city of the dead\u2014the sky flat with the road.<\/p>\n

Gates of eternity stand shut with padlock on.<\/p>\n

A grape without its pulp, flesh without flesh,<\/p>\n

Who, what are we, in life\u2019s mad dash?<\/p>\n

One moment, born\u2014next, shrivelled up and gone.

Crossing the skies at a crawl?<\/p>\n

How bright we bloomed in bygone days,<\/p>\n

All year, and more in springtime, I recall.<\/p>\n

 
\nPeople end up with all kinds of breaks\u2026<\/p>\n

In the sepulchers of leaves under the cherry,<\/p>\n

No leaves are accidental\u2014all are buried.<\/p>\n

All will rot, whichever one you take.

Still, the loss appears too great, too cruel\u2014<\/p>\n

As if something broke that matters most,<\/p>\n

And how precious little we have wanted\u2014<\/p>\n

Just that they should live\u2026 the leaves and all.
