What shall I take with me, what to grab, tell me,<\/p>\n what shall I put on my feet \u2014 sneakers or boots?<\/p>\n Should I take a small pot?<\/p>\n Kitchen knives? <\/p>\n The canary in its cage?<\/p>\n A kitten in a basket of fruits? In a panic I grab this and that:<\/p>\n books from the shelf, laundry from the tub\u2026<\/p>\n Winter will come \u2014 I should take a coat, a hat\u2026<\/p>\n toys for the children\u2026 if they allow them. My strength and my bearing, my pride and my rights \u2014<\/p>\n what else can you take \u2014<\/p>\n but whatever you do,<\/p>\n everything you take with you,<\/p>\n they’ll seize by the ditch.<\/p>\n And only your soul will remain whole. * <\/p>\n Yes, of course I remember <\/p>\n the small details of life:<\/p>\n the red T-shirt,<\/p>\n the bowl of strawberries,<\/p>\n the little coffee cup,<\/p>\n our boy nearly fell off the balcony \u2014<\/p>\n a white cup \u2014<\/p>\n what did you read at the bottom,<\/p>\n something so frightening<\/p>\n you threw it down? * <\/p>\n Being human is unbearable \u2014<\/p>\n better to be a tree a pit a wisp of smoke,<\/p>\n a sunbeam \u2014 kitchen fumes \u2014 a joke,<\/p>\n a forest \u2014 a horse \u2014 a waterfall \u2014<\/p>\n \u2026a reptile<\/p>\n a beast \u2014 a bird \u2014 a chase \u2014 a horn,<\/p>\n a door \u2014 a staircase \u2014 \u2026a God\u2026 * <\/p>\n Can I sew the tear of being <\/p>\n back together <\/p>\n gather the fraying edges, <\/p>\n and bite the thread off<\/p>\n gods what to talk about with a cat<\/p>\n so it won’t run away<\/p>\n What to chatter with the home fire <\/p>\n that’s not a fire yet <\/p>\n I know well that we’ll all die<\/p>\n in rain or flame,<\/p>\n or next to that same miserable cat <\/p>\n in a washbasin, still dry * <\/p>\n Morning comes ringing a little bell<\/p>\n waking me \u2014 but I’m not there.<\/p>\n The feeling I have in this world, oh well \u2014<\/p>\n what I lack most of all is me, here. <\/p>\n and darkness grabs hold of my hands to stay, <\/p>\n reads my thoughts and flies away \u2014 <\/p>\n clearly it, too, lacks me. In the rustle of night, in the day’s shining glee,<\/p>\n what I lack most of all is me.
