Kemerovo, Russia

Ivan Filichev (1937–2021) was a native of Bryansk. He graduated from the Yelets Art School and the Kharkiv Art Institute, and spent his entire 60-year artistic career in Western Siberia. He was an Honored Artist of Russia, a recipient of numerous awards, and a participant in exhibitions in Russia, Mongolia, the United States, and China, from 1961 until his passing ин 2024. His works are held in museums and private collections in various countries. He served as а curator of the Kemerovo Art School from from the days of its founding, and as curator for amateur artists in Kuzbass. Among the themes he explored in his works, the following became particularly significant: war, labor, motherhood, humanity, nature, biblical themes, and Christianity. His travels resulted in a series of works: Mongolia, Egypt, Central Asia, India, and Damansky Island. The roots of Filichev’s painting lie in the Russian school (the iconography of Rublev, Theophan Grek, the Peredvizhniki, Korovin, Vrubel, and “The Jack of Diamonds”) and the European tradition: El Greco, Cézanne, Matisse. His search for ways to express images led him from realism to non-figurative art, yet each work has its own language, its own style, and its own color. The principle of his painting is color without white pigments or with minimal use of them. He is a recognized master of color and the nuances of line. The artist’s legacy consists of approximately 7,000 paintings and 11,000 drawings. Ivan Filichev is listed in the encyclopedia *World Lexicon of Artists* (Munich-Leipzig, 2003).

by Boris Khersonsky, Ludmila Khersonsky

Boris Khersonsky and Ludmila Khersonsky write poetry that speaks to the crisis of our time, when refugees run from bombardments, and nonstop propaganda flows from TV. The setting is Ukraine at the start of the twenty-first century, but it is eerily recognizable anywhere.
