Poetic work consumes me twice.

First, by the solemn sacrifice-

of time, of loves, of every thread

to which my soul is fondly wed,

the bread of life, the daily cares,

the means by which I climb the stairs

toward the altar, still and bare,

where all I’ve cherished pays the fare.
 

What is the cost of Paradise?

I’m stripped to the core to pay the price,

Delivered, just as I was born:

with beating heart, but unadorned,

with breath, but only through the cries,

and filled with nascent wonder, eyes

in awe, gaze on what fills new room

as I am born from second womb.
 

The former phase of life I thought

was Universe. But now I see-it bought

me only exit from the past.

Existence in the womb can’t last.
 

Poetic work consumes me twice:

first through the solemn sacrifice

of everything that I held dear,

then by the written lines drawn near,

as poem gathers in the hand…

until the next altar brings the end.

Меня сжигает дважды стих.

Сначала — жертвою моих

любовей, времени, всего,

что дорого душе живой.

Насущный хлеб, чреда забот —

все это вверх меня ведёт

по строгой лестнице алтарной,

где я сложу священный дар мой.
 

Чем заплачу у райских врат?

До ниточки всем, чем богат,

явлюсь таким, как в мир пришел:

хоть сердце бьётся, сам же — гол,

хотя дышу, но только в крик,

и лишь восторг уже возник:

на дивный мир глазею в оба,

рождаясь из второй утробы.
 

Казалось, в первой жизни той —

весь мир. Теперь ее ценой

я лишь расстаться с прошлым рад.

В утробе вечно не сидят.
 

Меня сжигает дважды стих:

Сначала жертвой дорогих

душе вещей, затем в свой срок

явленьем на бумаге строк,

и вот стихи в руке моей…

А там — до новых алтарей.
